Dierdre Thornton

Dierdre Thornton is the founder of Building Community Indiana.  Prior to starting Building Community, Thornton spent thirty years in a corporate setting at Xerox Corporation responsible for sales, marketing, operations, technical service, customer satisfaction, loyalty, and consulting.  She has owned two small businesses, worked as business coach to small homebased businesses and is a public speaker where see speaks to high school students on skills needed as they transition to work, higher education or military service. 

Thornton has served on the board of the Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis and was instrumental in improving fundraising and operational efficiency.  She currently serves on the City of Carmel Commission for Human Relations where she established the annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration, created communication sessions between public safety and residents. She is also on the board of Families First Indianapolis that is focused on mental health counseling, education, crisis intervention, and other support for people who need help dealing with issues that are tough to tackle alone. 

Thornton has always been interested in equity in policy creation and in 2018, as a first-time candidate, Thornton became the democratic nominee for U.S. House of Representatives in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. Thornton is always looking for how she can make a difference. Since the pandemic, she has offered her skills to help with contact tracing for COVID-19 to help stop the spread.
